About map scales in surveying
Map scale is the ratio between a distance on the map and the corresponding real-world distance. A scale of 1:25,000 means 1 cm on the map equals 25,000 cm = 250 m in reality. Smaller denominators (1:1,000) show more detail but cover less area; larger denominators (1:100,000) cover more area with less detail.
This tool handles three common tasks: computing real distance from a measured map distance, finding the required map distance for a known real distance, and determining the map scale when both distances are known. It supports metric (mm, cm, m, km) and imperial (inches, feet, miles) units interchangeably.

Common use cases
Planning a survey by measuring distances on a topographic map before going to the field.
Computing the real size of features seen on aerial imagery or orthophotos.
Determining the scale of an unscaled map from known distances.
Preparing output at specific scales for printing site plans (1:100, 1:500, 1:1000).
Frequently asked questions
What are standard map scales?
Large scale: 1:500 to 1:5000 (urban planning, cadastral). Medium: 1:10,000 to 1:50,000 (topographic maps). Small: 1:100,000+ (regional/national maps).
Why is it called "larger" or "smaller" scale?
A "large scale" map has a large ratio (small denominator) and shows less area with more detail. A "small scale" map has a small ratio (large denominator) and covers more area with less detail. This is often counter-intuitive.
Does scale depend on the distance measured?
Ideally no, but map distortion (especially for large areas) means scale slightly varies across a map. For GIS/CAD work, verify scale with multiple measurements.
How do I compute area on a scaled map?
Area scale = (linear scale)². For a 1:25,000 map, 1 cm² equals 25,000² = 625,000,000 cm² = 62,500 m² = 6.25 ha.
