Drone Mission Planner

Pre-flight planning for drone photogrammetry. Pick a drone, draw the area on the map, set altitude & overlap — get GSD, flight time, photo count, battery count, and an exportable KML flight plan. Free, no signup.

The planner uses standard photogrammetric formulas: GSD = sensor width × altitude × 100 / (focal length × image width). Adjust overlap and altitude in real time and the flight path on the map redraws instantly. Click "Draw on map" to define your own polygon over any site worldwide.

💡 Pro tip: keep your GSD under 3 cm/px and overlap at 80/70 frontal/lateral for orthorectified output that survives processing in Pix4D, Agisoft Metashape, RealityCapture, or WebODM. Cut overlap below 70/60 only if you are sure your post-processing software handles thin coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What GSD do I need for my project?

Cadastral mapping: 2–3 cm/px. Topographic surveys: 3–5 cm/px. Volumetric stockpile: 3–4 cm/px. Infrastructure inspection: ≤1 cm/px. The planner colors GSD green when under 3 cm/px, amber up to 5, red above 5.

Where does the camera spec data come from?

All drone specs (sensor size, focal length, image resolution, max altitude, flight time) come from public manufacturer datasheets. We track 20+ real models from DJI, Autel, Parrot, Wingtra, senseFly, Skydio.

Can I import the KML directly into DJI Pilot or Litchi?

Yes. The KML follows OGC standard and is compatible with DJI Pilot 2 (RC Pro), Litchi (route planner), QGroundControl, Mission Planner, and most flight-planning apps. The CSV is plain lat/lng/altitude if you need raw data.

Does the planner account for terrain elevation?

Currently no — the altitude is relative to the takeoff point (AGL). For complex terrain consider terrain-follow mode in your flight app or a DEM-based planner. We are evaluating adding SRTM-based terrain follow in a future release.
